WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT HAVING A MEMBERSHIP?!?!
If you are like most people in our community, you have asked yourself "What do I need a community membership for?" You might be thinking of the following:
- I don’t use the facilities;
- I’m retired;
- I don’t have children;
- There isn’t anything there that interests me;
- The community association doesn’t do anything for me so why should I buy a membership?
- It costs too much. ($15.00/family, $5.00/seniors & singles)
These reasons are all familiar to the Board of Directors, but it's important to understand how your membership helps out the whole community. Here are a few examples:
- Registration with sports associations like Trails West Hockey have bylaws requiring that players must have a valid Community Membership to register;
- Allows the Community Association to represent you and your community in a number of areas. Specifically, over the past year, the Rutland Park Community Association has:
- Met with representatives from surrounding communities (Ward 8 Presidents Committee, CFB West Traffic Committee) to discuss traffic issues that affect all of us;
- Arranged public information meetings regarding the development in our community;
- Regularly met with our Alderman in order to keep her aware of issues within our community and neighboring area;
- Met with developers to ensure new developments near our area enhance our community – not detract from it;
- Endeavored to make our community centre a viable, profitable and well-used facility so that we can re-establish and continue to support non-profit groups such as Scouts and Kidzinc;
- Raised funds to sponsor activities in the community such as park and play, park and stay, and youth leadership programs;
- Organized various community events such as skating parties and jellybean dances that provide wholesome activities for youth in the community.
So, at $15.00 per year, or $1.25/month, less than the price of a coffee at Tim Horton's you can contribute to your community.
Please make an effort to fill in a membership form or contact Gord Leach at 249-5900. This is about your life, your community, and it’s about YOU.
